The Cajon Tour

On Sat. August 21, The Jazz Mandolin Project hits the road sharing the bill with the legendary Los Lobos at the Chill on Kingsbury, in Chicago, the show that kicks off JMP's August "Cajon" tour. Luminaries performing on this tour will include Jamie Masefield on mandolins, Michael "MadDog" Mavridoglou on trumpet and keyboards, Scott Ritchie on upright bass and effects, and as a special feature of this tour, drummer Mark Guiliana
will be featured performing the "Cajon". This is a percussion instrument that is believed to originate in the port towns of Peru. It is wooden box that the player sits on which has a sound hole on one side. When slaves from W. Africa were brought to the Americas they were ordered to burn their own drums as it was believed that they impowered their moral. But slaves working the docks soon found that cod fish shipping crates also made great drums, and began developing a new modified South American tradition. After studying under Peruvian Cajon master, Loja Lima, Guiliana will share this rarely heard instrument with listeners. Dont miss it!

Always call before you haul, and we'll see you at the shows!
